Society has grown with economic progress. Pari passu with society’s growth, social units have become ever smaller. In the limit, every individual is living alone, as a self-sufficient economic unit. Even the so-called nuclear family is disappearing with economic progress. What will happen with economic regress, though? Society will shrink and social units will grow. First the family will gain in importance once again, but it will soon be pushed aside by the clan. In the limit, the tribe will come back into existence. Made up of a number of clans, which will cooperate and compete between themselves, it will become the dominant mode of social existence one more time. Neighboring tribes will cooperate and compete between themselves, but the society will gradually disappear from the scene. At best, it will become an environment for economic exchange. So, what is better—economic progress or regress? For better or worse, this is an irrelevant question. In fact, it is not even a question, for there cannot be any meaningful answers to it. Put differently, economic progress and regress are not choices available to either individuals or societies. At this stage of evolution, it depends on climate and nothing but climate whether economic progress or regress will be taking place.
