ON CORPORATE IDIOCY (May 1, 2015)

My mobile phone is next to my bed when I go to sleep. I am always in touch with my beloved. I was awoken this morning by a text-message, and I thought it was she. Actually, it was Croatian Telecom, which is owned by Deutsche Telecom. They were informing me that on April 30 at eight o’clock and four minutes in the evening I had exhausted the number of text-messages available to me in accordance with my current agreement with the company, but that all the other messages will be charged the same amount of money as heretofore for the rest of the month. It was eight o’clock and fifteen minutes in the morning. And it is May 1, which is a public holiday in Croatia and much of the European Union. Even more, it is the International Workers’ Day! No matter the time and date, the Telecom message is mindboggling. It amounts to corporate boasting, no less. Besides, the end of April was only hours away when I supposedly exhausted the number of text-messages in accordance with my current agreement with the company. But the message is also callous at such an inopportune time and date. What better example of corporate idiocy than Croatian Telecom’s text-message this very morning?! Deutsche Telecom’s poodle going gaga on a public holiday.
