MSIRUOT (May 27, 2015)
Reclining at my favorite table at Marko’s on the lower square, I see the whole world without any effort on my part. And no kidding. I just sit and stare while thousands upon thousands of tourist traipse by my table day in and day out. Msiruot, or tourism in reverse, is my most solemn entertainment, too. It not only costs next to nothing, for drinks at Marko’s are quite reasonably priced even at the height of the tourist season, but it also kills every desire on my part to visit all of the countries from which the tourists hail. And they do hail from every continent gracing this planet. Seen it, done it. Thank you very much. I cannot but recommend reverse tourism to the few with discerning taste. Indeed, msiruot is the best way to see the whole world. As well as to get sated with it without even trying.
Addendum (September 21, 2016)
As yet another tourist season is edging toward its end, I must admit that I am getting tired of msiruot, as well. Reclining at my favorite table at Marko’s, I often find myself looking the other way when I see yet another busload of tourists approaching me along the lower square. From quite a distance, I can tell where they are coming from. And I can guess how many of them will be obese or on crutches. Seen it, done it. Thank you very much, indeed. Since my move to Motovun, I have seen the whole world many times over. As well as a few times too many, I hasten to add. For all its advantages over tourism, msiruot can get pretty boring, too. I can only hope that my zest for this particular form of entertainment will perk up by the beginning of the next tourist season. Fingers crossed.
