MONKEYS IN ALL BUT NAME (January 29, 2015)
Sitting in one of my favorite cafés in the pedestrian zone of the Croatian capital, I am watching two cars parked outside. Flags are standing next to them, suggesting that this is a display for advertising purposes. Judging by the interest they attract, the cars must be entirely new. One of them is red and the other is black. I am not sure of the make, for I know nothing about cars, but I am amazed by the behavior of passers by. To begin with, only men stop to look. More important, most of them are young men. Many of them walk around the cars and peep inside for a better look. Enthralled by what they see, some of them exchange a few comments from time to time. A large number of them pull out their mobile phones to photograph the cars on display. From my vantage point, I cannot but think of them all as monkeys. They are fascinated by shining surfaces and sleek shapes out of their reach. The only thing that puzzles me with this show is that no-one else sees the obvious connection. Humans have evolved, no doubt, but only just. They are monkeys in all but name. Which is why they are blind to the facts that stare in their faces.
