I just came across an article about an entire Hungarian village available for rent. The mayor of the village aims to put it on the map and thus bring in some cash. For about seven-hundred euros a day, interested parties can get the pretty but largely deserted village of Megyer with a population of eighteen people. An advertisement posted on the World Wide Web offers seven “peasant-style” houses, a cultural center, the mayor’s office, and a bus stop. The story reminded me of my ideas regarding Motovun (“Rent-a-Town,” August 2, 2014). I will have to talk with the mayor about this. For, say, ten-thousand euros a day, interested parties could get a pretty but largely deserted medieval town in the heart of Istria. It would be perfect for posh weddings, cultural events, and corporate gatherings. With Megyer as an example, much cash could be brought in and used for the upkeep of the hilltown. Hey, it would be like new in just a few years!
