GENDER EQUALITY AS SUCH (November 19, 2015)
There are many reasons why women are catching up with men in the rich world, but at least two reasons for the growing gender equality are obvious even in the streets and squares of the Croatian capital at its periphery. First, ever fewer men are actually men. Second, ever more women are hardly women. And the most straightforward proof of the conundrum is that there are ever fewer children in the rich world. As far as I am concerned, that is the most fortunate, albeit entirely unintended, consequence of the growing equality between men and women. Which is why I am a great fan of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transvestites, and all the others of this ilk (“LGBTISO,” March 7, 2014). Alas, equality in this sense is perhaps a bit too flagrant for comfort, but equality it definitely is. Gender equality as such, as it were.
