Powerhouse Geelong in Victoria, Australia, is in the news. Many a colorful picture of the place can now be found on the World Wide Web. Over the last six months, more than three-hundred and fifty street artists have transformed an industrial building abandoned forty-five years ago into an art Mecca. A project of Ian Ballis, who has been trying to get it going for some fourteen years, “it’s a space where artists can finally have free reign.” These are his own proud words. The only rules the artists must follow are that the work on show should be child-friendly, not offensive, and not overly political. One of the columns of the concrete building thus bears the following words in bright colors: “Please avoid anything too political. Thanks.” Pray, is this really a space where artists can finally have free reign? The first thing that crossed my mind when I saw that telltale column was the Soviet Union of old. Free reign, my ass.
