FIFA is in the news. Founded in 1904, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (sic) is the governing body of soccer tournaments, such as the World Cup, which started in 1930. Six senior FIFA officials were arrested in Zurich this morning on corruption charges. Surprise? None whatsoever. The most popular sport on the planet, soccer is corrupt from top to bottom. But so is any other international association governing anything you can think of—such as finance and banking, commerce, law, science and technology, art and entertainment, and so forth. Whatever humans do is suspect of corruption and organized crime because it is in their genes. Born liars and thieves, humans will pilfer and finagle anything under the sun. The only surprise in today’s news is that such surprises are surprisingly few. Corruption and organized crime are lucrative endeavors carefully protected from the prying eyes of the police establishment and spying agencies. For good measure, policing and espionage are corrupt from top to bottom, as well. Genes are genes, after all. FIFA, SCHMIFA. Nothing but the proverbial tip of the iceberg.

Addendum (June 5, 2015)

FIFA is still in the news. And how. Stories about corruption and organized crime committed in the name of soccer are all over the place. When will the hubbub finally abate, I wonder? But the FIFA scandal says a great deal about the human species at this stage of its evolution. Sport and theft combined. Nationalism and politics are also prominent. Far behind, there comes fame and sex. In the end, homo sapiens sapiens comes out as just another primate, as is only appropriate. Thanks to FIFA, everything is in plain view.
