I had a funny night. Between dreams, economy and ecology came to my mind. They have the same Greek root, oikos or “house, dwelling, habitation,” but they are at odds with each other. Nomos is Greek for “arranging, regulating, management,” and logia means “study, doctrine, science.” How come the two are so far apart nowadays? Whenever I would wake up in the middle of the night, the paradox resurfaced. By the morning, I figured it out between dreams. Once upon a time, the management and the science went together without a glitch because the household was small. It was within the reach of human intelligence. With billions of humans on the planet, the management and the science went their separate ways. The household has grown well beyond human ability to comprehend, let alone to manage. But tribal life is beckoning once again on account of dramatic climate change, which will drive down the human population. Economy and ecology will be reunited one more time when the household at their root shrinks back to the size comprehensible to humans. In the end, I woke up feeling quite happy.
