The last photograph I plucked from the World Wide Web shows Istria and much of Dalmatia from space. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration released it recently. In one corner of the photograph there is the Venetian lagoon. Most islands along the Croatian coast are in plain view, and many of them I know well. The Dinaric Alps are also prominent in the photograph. But why have I plucked this particular photograph? Sentimentality, of course. Damned sentimentality, to be a bit more precise. The photograph shows my world, as it were. This is where about forty generations of my ancestors would feel very much at home. This applies especially to the coastline. And so the new acquisition has joined many weird photographs, mostly of animals and works of art. One of them shows Istria from space, which I have plucked several years ago. The file would warrant a careful analysis, for it betrays a sentimental soul. My father’s Albania Palace is in it, for instance. And so is an aerial photograph of Angkor Wat. As well as a portrait of Hitler as a baby. Enough, though. Analysis can always wait.
