CRIMINAL SURVIVAL (February 17, 2015)

Thus a large graffito I spotted on a crumbling wall as I was walking around Zagreb this afternoon. What attracted my attention was an awkward drawing next to it showing a raised hand holding a cross. It was clear the sign and the drawing went together. The first thing that came to my mind was that the Christian church was indeed a master at criminal survival, as its wealth can readily testify, but the hand holding a cross could also mean that the church is the only hope against criminal survival. I searched for the expression on the World Wide Web as soon as I sat down at a nearby café, but all I found had nothing to do with the church. The expression carries a wide variety of meanings, none of which makes any sense to me at first glance. Although disappointed with my search, I decided to write a few words about the graffito. What with my interest in disaster management in connection with climate change and my abhorrence of the human species, the expression will surely come useful sooner or later. Criminal survival has a bright future, I reckon, but the raised hand holding the cross still gives me the creeps.
