CAPITALISM TRIUMPHANT (May 4, 2015)
Submarines are in the news. With Putin’s able help, they have resurfaced on the World Wide Web. Business newspapers are quite chipper about submarines needed to counter the Russian threat. Apparently, there is a growing demand for these weapon systems, and especially those that can serve as platforms for intercontinental missiles. Each submarine costs a mint, and many businesses are bound to fatten themselves on their supply. Given that Putin is unlikely to relent any time soon, there will also be a growing demand for aircraft carriers, fighter jets, and bombers. By and by, new bases will need to be built and equipped, and new recruits will be needed by the military. Rifles, machineguns, explosives, and much more will come next. Business newspapers are thus likely to get ever more chipper. In preparation for World War III, capitalism will surely fare well. What happens in the case of a real conflagration is another story, which is best pushed out of sight for the time being. But everything will be hunky-dory once the fighting subsides. Just think of all the new construction across the globe! Capitalism triumphant once again, or so the fat cats most sincerely hope. For them, it is all a game, anyway.
