Physicists seem to agree nowadays that the big bang will be followed by the big crunch. They also seem to agree that there will be another big bang after the upcoming big crunch. Bangs and crunches will keep following each other for ever and ever. According to different physicists, the last big bang took place between ten and twenty billion years ago. The next big crunch attracted my attention this morning, because I found an article claiming that it would come relatively soon. To my disappointment, the physicists behind the story are talking about another billion years or so. Willy-nilly, humans will keep going for quite a while. And I cannot but feel sorry for them well ahead of time. Alas, nature has no mercy! Or is it physics?
