A TOURIST NEVER AGAIN (June 26, 2015)

Living in a tourist town has many an unsuspected consequence. Having watched so many tourists over the years, and having laughed at them so often, I cannot imagine being a tourist ever again. It is not the laughter of the locals that I wish to avoid, though. I just cannot imagine traipsing around the world in search of charming places to visit any longer. What for? Looking for a better place to live would be the only viable reason, but it takes much more than a brief visit to choose one. And I know what I am saying, for charm is deceptive to boot. Motovun is charming enough, no doubt whatsoever, but it is hardly a town any more. Like any other tourist attraction, it is no more than a stage set to be appreciated only from the outside. The more attractive it becomes, the less of a town it turns out to be. In a few short years, it will be for tourists only. So, why would I ever wish to visit another place of this ilk, no matter how charming? But I am not complaining, I hasten to add. In fact, I am rejoicing. Given my experience, I will be a tourist never again, and that is well worth celebrating. Even more, it is worth boasting about.
