A MYTHICAL CREATURE (December 10, 2015)

It is amazing to see how warmly dressed are the inhabitants of Zagreb on this cloudy but warm day. It is eight degrees Celsius according to the meteorologists, but many people are dressed as though the temperature is well below zero. This applies especially to women, who still take seasons pretty seriously in spite of all the evidence that they are history already. On my way to the central bus station, I keep wondering at all the woolen hats and scarves, all the heavy coats and boots, and all the leather gloves. If one had no idea of the actual temperature, one would guess that it was freezing outside. Walking in my unzipped fleece with only a T-shirt under it, though, I am perfectly comfortable. Well, I also have a knapsack on my back, but it offers little heat. I only wonder what would these poor people wear if it got really cold. If the temperature ever fell to eight degrees Celsius below zero, say, most of them would not even dare leave their homes, I bet. In just a few generations, the civilized tenderfoot triumphs over the sturdy peasant. Soon enough, the peasant becomes a mythical creature.
