A LIFE-SAVING SHAVE (October 1, 2015)

A merino sheep from Australia is in the news. It got so famous so fast that it even got a name, Chris. Now, it was found wandering alone just outside Canberra in early September. And it immediately underwent a life-saving shave, for its fleece was so massive that it entered the Guinness Book of Records. There was more than forty kilograms of wool in it, while the previous record from New Zealand was short of thirty kilograms. Judging by the photographs of the sheep before shearing, it could hardly function with its humongous fleece. Now, merino sheep were bred for their wool, and they could face health problems, or even die, if they are not sheared regularly. Having read about the poor sheep’s plight, I grew angry with the breeders. How many merino sheep like Chris will perish once there will be no-one to shear them?! Perhaps millions. And all this because the silly breeders could not even imagine the day when a life-saving shave would be beyond their own means.
