“WHAT BIRDS UNDERSTAND THAT EINSTEIN DIDN’T” (August 1, 2015)

Thus The Wall Street Journal today. “Quantum weirdness helps explain how plants make food, animals migrate, and humans think,” explains the newspaper. I was delighted by the title, which hit the nail on the head, but the byline disappointed me to the point of leaving the article unread. Quantum weirdness? This strikes me as just another term for human stupidity. Who cares exactly how the world works, after all? What is essential is how to live in this world no matter how it works. And birds are indeed better than humans in this regard. Much better. Here, Einstein was a toddler for any sparrow or pigeon. And so is any other human ever born, no matter how bright by any standard of measurement. As I plough through the news this morning, I am amazed to find nothing on climate change and environmental degradation in all its guises. Not a peep. Although the world as we know it is falling apart at a clip, humans keep bantering about events and activities of no real concern to anyone. Here is an article about Zuckerberg’s baby and dog, there about the Chinese stalling economy, and over yonder about Osama bin Laden’s sister and stepmother who died in a plane crash someplace in Britain. Who the fuck cares? Quantum weirdness, no doubt. As Einstein put it, human stupidity is infinite.  That of the birds can be defined pretty precisely, though.
