“THE POLITICS OF DISTRUST” (October 17, 2015)

Thus The Wall Street Journal today. “What explains the weird unpredictability of the 2016 presidential race in America?” asks the newspaper. “An anemic economy that has Americans questioning incumbents, doubting experts, and worrying about their own prospects.” Not to mention growing geopolitical instability, the list is pretty awesome. And the unpredictability will most likely continue to the election day, thus making the geopolitical quagmire deeper and wider. Which makes the 2016 presidential race a nearly perfect environment for Putin to do whatever he pleases in the Middle East, where America has already created a mess of historical proportions. The next president of the United States will thus have an entirely new world to contend with early next year. What holds for America, holds also for Europe. An increasingly anemic economy will have everyone in the rich world ever more doubtful about incumbents, experts, and their own prospects. Welcome to the Twenty-First Century, the age of unpredictability!
