“SOME SCIENTISTS QUESTION CLIMATE-CHANGE BENCHMARK” (November 30, 2015)
Thus The Wall Street Journal today. “The most important benchmark underpinning talks on climate change—two degrees Celsius—has guided climate-treaty discussions for decades, but some scientists say it is an arbitrary threshold,” elaborates the newspaper. Of course it is. Given the science behind climate change, though, every other threshold would be just as arbitrary. Still, humans appear not to be able to do a thing without such arbitrary benchmarks, and two degrees Celsius is thus a useful one in spite of all its faults. Besides, this is the wrong day to bring up such news. The best that the human species can hope for at this juncture is a lasting deal in Paris. Coming up with the opinion of “some” scientists on the opening day of climate talks is no less than ludicrous. And it is coming from one of the leading financial newspapers on the planet! Some scientists also question the current financial revival of the so-called west, but there is not a peep about it on this special day. Who says economics is not a science, as well as a dismal one on top of that?
