“ONE WEEK ON, NEPAL QUAKE VICTIMS HELP THEMSELVES” (May 3, 2015)

Thus The Guardian today. “Nepal government criticized for blocking earthquake aid to remote areas,” elaborates the newspaper. Surprise, surprise. The article goes on and on about the government’s inept ways, entrenched corruption, social and religious divisions in the country, and so on, but what shines through is the resourcefulness of the small communities in dealing with the disaster. A health worker turned de facto village head is quoted at the end of the article: “I’m sure things will be better in the coming years. It’s people like us, who have come together, rescuing each other, managing our food, without the government, who are united, who will build a better future.” Exactly. Screw the government. The only way forward is to rely on one’s own community. The smaller, the better. And this does not apply to Nepal only, it goes without saying. It applies across the board. Forever.
