“DONALD TRUMP, PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL” (July 25, 2015)

Thus The Financial Times today. “Millions of Americans love him,” elaborates the newspaper, “and that might put Hillary Clinton in the White House.” A cute twist, this. And an entirely plausible one, for that matter. But there is still hope that Trump will make it into the White House instead of Clinton. America deserves a real clown at the helm at this juncture, and there is nobody who could beat him to the glorious title. A decade ago, Sarah Palin seemed to be the best clown on offer, but then she mysteriously disappeared from the field. It was a great pity, too. Democracy as it has come to pass in America is crying out for the likes of Palin and Trump. The same holds for Europe, where the likes of Silvio Berlusconi and Nicolas Sarkozy can only add that little something to the popular pastime, which is democracy in its present guise. For it offers entertainment where one would least expect it. Ancient Rome was bursting with clowns among emperors, and especially near its end. The endless entertainment only softened the fall, no doubt. Go Trump, go! History is on your funny side!
