PARTING (December 30, 1989)

Yet another volume of my Residua, another yearbook, is about to be closed. Of course, I will keep writing addenda to these notes as long as I live, but the number of notes in this yearbook will remain fixed. There will forever remain only so many hooks on which to hang my memories of this year among years. Although the notion of a yearbook is as spurious as that of a year, there is a special excitement that overtakes me as I contemplate the hesitant approach of another year. The excitement of imminent parting. The apparition of time.

Addendum (February 18, 2025)

Having come across this piece of writing entirely by chance, I decided to count all the addenda extending the sixty-four pieces written this year. And I am surprised by the count. It is way above the number that I have expected, that is. In particular, there are ninety-two addenda written over nineteen years, which stretch from 1989 to 2023. Amazingly, no less than forty of them were penned in 1989. Other years replete with addenda are 1990 with eight, 1991 with six, 1994 with ten, 2000 with five, and 2016 with four. There were one or two of them written in the remaining thirteen years. Counting this one, 1989 has been regaled with ninety-three addenda so far. Wow! And it is anyone’s guess how many more will be there by the time I wrap up my magnum opus, which will be in four or five years from now.
