THE MIGHTY SIX (May 9, 2025)

Feeling that he was getting long in the tooth, Chieftain Buroogu started looking for his eventual replacement. To be sure that he would not make a mistake, he focused on two youngsters who excelled in important skills. Kirigi was surprisingly good at hunting, and Dagootu excelled at fighting. Hunting was essential to the tribe’s daily life, but fighting came to the fore when neighboring tribes were on the move, or when large or small groups of marauders appeared out of nowhere. A good deal of cooperation and a tiny bit of competition between the two youngsters would be good for all, the chieftain reckoned. Buroogu was also delighted by the decision of Walai, the medicine man, who had chosen Tugoodu as his disciple a while back. More and more often, Buroogu and Walai could be seen together with Kirigi, Dagootu, and Tugoodu. By and by, the chieftain started teasing the medicine man. “Old friend,” he would chuckle, “what if anything happened to Tugoodu? Wouldn’t it be clever to have one more disciple, just in case?” The medicine man was thinking about it, but he could not imagine anyone in his post except Tugoodu. And then Weetala broke both legs by falling from a tall tree just as she had reached maturity. Walai and Tugoodu helped her by lining her bones and tying her legs to straight branches, as well as providing her with sturdy crutches, which she used for a while. When her legs healed, she joined the medicine brothers, and she learned their skills surprisingly quickly. At last, the chieftain and the medicine man were surrounded by two disciples each. Whenever all of them would get together, they would get merry quickly. Weetala turned out to be gifted at amusing the whole crew, and they accepted her without much ado. From then on, the entire tribe started calling them the mighty six. Having learned about this covert nickname, the disciples started teasing Buroogu and Walai whenever an opportunity arose. “Old chaps,” Weetala would tease the chieftain and the medicine man every now and then, “the elders are dying for your company!” There would be much laughter each and every time. The elders were delighted by her skill, as well. “Hey,” they would nudge each other, “the future is bright!” Slowly but surely, the whole tribe became enamored with Weetala’s skill with words.
