PLAUDITE, CIVES! (November 3, 1976)
So many changes, so many reforms, characteristic of Yugoslavia, hardly conceal the lack of any real change. As Giuseppe di Lampedusa (The Leopard) put it, “if we want things to stay as they are, things will have to change. D’you understand?” Actually, the change conceals the haphazard groping of the power-structure, always trying to hide behind the scenes, to be invisible, even though its bulky body shows so well regardless of where it hides.
The change always comes from above, as a gift from the Heavens, as the benevolence of our Fathers… Where is the locus of change, of the continuous tumult? Who demands it and why? Who is responsible for the consequences of proposed reforms, as well as for the situation that supposedly demands these reforms?
The League of Communists must be visible and its rôle explicit! It must play a rôle which is widely understood. It must be an understandable source of the movement of the whole society. However, a precondition for this is that the internal struggle is sufficiently developed. Factions must be visible! Their purposes must be clear to the masses. The struggle between the factions must be understandable to the masses, because the masses must be involved in these struggles directly. Only that way can they stop being simply the masses.
