NE QUID NIMIS (May 21, 1976)

In a stagnating post-revolutionary society the party finds itself in a dilemma: on the one hand, Marxist thought remains intrinsically revolutionary, and therefore dangerous to spread; on the other hand, it provides the very core of its legitimization. Marxism cannot be suppressed in general, but only in its specific forms. But, this deals with the problem only partially. What about the classics? They cannot be prohibited! But, our party bureaucracy found a better strategy, one that presents itself as its very opposite: they stuff the classics down people’s throat and thus make them odious. They advertise Marxism ad nauseam. The more they insist, the more they succeed in alienating the people from the potentially inflammatory critical theory. At the same time they are free to parade around claiming that they have done everything in their powers to propagate the theory that they have supposedly realized in practice.
