CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE (October 16, 2009)
Yesterday evening I was welcomed to Motovun by a pretty sight: a bunch of cars parked right in the middle of the upper square. I know their owners, all of whom live within the medieval town walls. And I know that some of them like to explain their behavior in terms of civil disobedience. That is, the deliberate breaking of the law by ordinary citizens as a nonviolent protest or passive resistance. The authorities supposedly challenged in this case are the municipal council and the mayor. They are unable to resolve the growing parking problem in town. Almost everyone has a car now, and many families have a few. But I know that the owners of the cars parked in the middle of the upper square actually could not care less about the authorities. All they care about is not walking more than a few steps between their cars and their homes. And they are brazen enough to challenge anyone who wishes to complain about their behavior, the hapless authorities included. Civil disobedience, my ass.
